Studies

The CUBER project includes a number of studies on different topics:

   Exploring the Field

At the beginning of the project two types of studies explored the needs of the parties involved: a first market study done in Germany provided more information on existing systems, needs of course providers, and the needs of corporations looking for vocational training. There are two further studies planned in other countries than Germany. A set of user studies explored the search behavior of users looking for courses, their approaches, strategies, and failures. These studies included experiments with existing systems in the same domain.

   Meta-Data Specification

To describe learning units, courses and programs a meta-data scheme is under development. It is based on existing or emerging international standards and especially the IEEE Learning Objects Metadata (LOM) standard. A first version has been published already in June 2000. It is based on requirements of providers and existing standards. Further requirements of course providers have been studied in the workpackage on meta-data acquisition.

Use of European Credit Transfer System (ECTS)

The recognition of course credits is crucial for building a federated virtual university. A case study on the requirements and procedures to allow exchange of courses will investigate ways to integrate credit point information into the meta-data and provide students with information on course acceptance.
